The 1871 census for Marylebone records gas engineer George Yeo at 31 Paddington Green; his age is shown as 63 and his birthplace as Christian Malford, Wiltshire. Listed with him are his wife Susannah Yeo (age 59, also born at Christian Malford) and his unmarried daughter Louisa Yeo (age 30, born at Sutton Benger, a village close to Christian Malford).
George Yeo was baptised at Christian Malford in 1809 to unmarried mother Jane Yeo. He married Susannah Townsend at Sutton Benger in 1832; they had four daughters there:
– Julia Yeo (1836–1836)
– Emily Yeo (born 1839)
– Louisa Yeo (1841–1930) [note 1]
– Fanny Yeo (1853–1898, married Alfred Hastings Davis).
The 1861 census records them in London [note 2]. George died two years after the 1871 census was taken [note 3].
Susannah has not been found in 1881, but the 1891 census for London records her as a 79-year-old widow at 3 Warwick Street, Deptford. She is listed in the household of 37-year-old draper’s assistant Alfred Davis. Alfred is married to Susannah’s daughter Fanny Yeo, and Susannah’s unmarried daughter Louisa Yeo is also listed [notes 4, 6]. Susannah died at 3 Warwick Street in 1902; her death certificate records her as the widow of gas engineer George Yeo [note 5].
