People in five households are recorded in online indexes to the 1911 census for England and Wales with the surname Yoe.
The analysis below suggests that for none of these records is Yoe accurate, and that in all five cases the surname was incorrectly written as Yoe by the census enumerator. It might be relevant that four of the people were living away from home with someone who might not have been familiar with the spelling of their name:
1. 16-year-old Beatrice Yoe, recorded as a domestic servant in the household of farmer John Steer at Bidna, Northam. She is a good match for Beatrice Ann Yeo, born at Appledore in 1894 to parents William Henry Yeo and Elizabeth Welsford. Beatrice later married Thomas William Kelly and Thomas Taylor, and died in 1976.
2. 32-year-old tin miner John Yoe, recorded at Pool, near Redruth, with his 30-year-old wife Wilmot and their children Janie (9) [note 1], Chrissie (4) [note 2] and Percy (1 month) [note 3]. This family is a clear match to John Yeo [note 4] and Wilmot Ellis, who married in 1898 and had only these three children.
3. 13-year-old John Yeo, living with farmer George Tucker and his family at Churchill, East Down and working on the farm as a ‘cow boy’. He is a good match to the John Yeo born at Marwood in 1897 to parents George Yeo and Elizabeth Woollacott and who died in 1916.
4. 26-year-old Louisa Yoe, a unmarried servant living with the family of Robert and Edith Thistlethwayte in Elm Park Gardens, London SW10. She is a good match to Louisa Sarah Yeo [note 5], daughter of John Yaw and Harriet Salisbury.
5. 16-year-old William Yoe, living with the family of farmer John Bowden at Bows, Berrynarbour and working on the farm. William’s birthplace is given as Hele, and his age appears to be over-stated by two years, as he is otherwise a match to the William Yeo born in 1896 to parents William Yeo and Ellen Tucker [note 6].
