People in nineteen households are recorded in online indexes to the 1851 census for England and Wales with the surname Yoe. None appear to be accurate.
In nine cases the surname was incorrectly written as Yoe:
1. 49-year-old agricultural labourer Sam Yoe, listed in St Veep with his 45-year-old wife Elizabeth and his children Rd. (age 19), Elizabeth (17), Mary Ann (13), Samuel (10), Jane (8), William C. (5), Hannah M. (2) and Emmah (3 months). All ten people were born at Lanteglos; they are a clear match to the family of Samuel Yeo and Elizabeth Curtis, who married at St Veep in 1829.
2. Also in St Veep, listed in the household of William Andrew, is 24-year-old farm servant William Yoe. He is a match to William Hunking Yeo, son of William Yeo and Mary Hunking.
3. A third household in St Veep has 57-year-old single woman Mary Yoe, listed at Middle Penpoll with visitor Rebecca Sandy. Her birthplace is given as St Veep, but Mary is a clear match to the Mary Yeo baptised at Lansallos in 1793 – a first cousin once removed of William Hunking Yeo. Rebecca might have been related to William’s wife.
4. 48-year-old dock labourer Henry Yoe, listed in West Ham with his 46-year-old wife Susan and his children Emma (age 16) and Susan (12). They appear to match the family of Henry Yeo and Susanna Friend, who married at Greenwich in 1825.
5. 33-year-old blacksmith William Yoe, listed in Peylnt, Cornwall with his 32-year-old wife Mary, his children Elizabeth Mary (age 5) and William (4). Also in the household is 72-year-old pensioner Elizabeth Crapp, recorded as his aunt. They are a match to the family of William Yeo and Mary Snell.
6. 28-year-old Richard Yoe, recorded as a clerk of insolvency at a debtors’ court, and 27-year-old single woman Frances Yeo, recorded as a housekeeper, living at 40 Southville in Lambeth. They are a clear match to brother and sister Richard William Yeo and Frances Emma Yeo baptised in Lambeth in 1822 and 1824 respectively to parents Thomas Yeo and Ann Greathurst, who married at St Martin-in-the-Fields in 1913.
7. 43-year-old widow Jane Yoe, a dressmaker living in the Clifton area of Bristol with her birthplace recorded simply as ‘Devon’. Listed with her are her sons Robert (age 10) and John (3), also visitor Elizabeth Gribble. Jane Paddon had married Robert Yeo in Barnstaple in 1830; he had died in the West Indies in 1847.
8. 42-year-old housemaid Elizabeth Yoe, listed in the household of Harry Pritchard in Park Hill, Clapham. Her birthplace is recorded as Wincanton, Somerset and she is a match to the Elizabeth Yeo baptised there in 1808 to parents John and Hannah Yeo.
9. 21-year-old Thomas Yoe, a farm servant in the household of William Andrews at Fulbrook Barton. He was born at West Down, and despite the apparent discrepancy in his age is most likely a match to the George Yeo baptised there in 1834 to parents Thomas Yeo and Mary Manning.
Further research is needed to clarify the remaining ten records, but it is unlikely that Yoe is correct:
1. 12-year-old Eliza Yoe, listed in the household of John Thornley at 2 Ordsall Lane in Salford, Lancashire and recorded as his niece. Eliza’s birthplace is the village of Lane Green in Staffordshire; she has not been identified.
2. 81-year-old single woman Frances Yoe and 42-year-old single woman Mary Yeo, recorded in Steynton, Pembrokeshire (a village near Milford Haven) as lodgers in the household of George Lloyd. Neither woman has been identified, but they might have been related to each other and there might be a connection to James Yeo and Martha Thomas.
3. 23-year-old house servant Hannah Yoe, listed at Morval in Cornwall in the household of land agent John Palmer. Her birthplace is given as Duloe, but she has not been identified.
4. 62-year-old labourer Joseph Yoe, a widower living in West Ham with his unmarried daughters Elizabeth (age 32) and Jane (11) and lodger William Edge. They have not been identified.
5. 75-year-old Mary Yoe, living in Launcells in north Cornwall and described as a pauper, widow of an agricultural labourer. Her birthplace is recorded as Launcells; she has not been identified.
6. 26-year-old farm servant Thomas Yoe, living at Raphael, Lansallos in the household of farmer Mary Coath. His birthplace is recorded as Lansallos, but he has not been identified.
7. Also in Lansallos, in the household of farmer Peter Hitchens at Great Treague, is 18-year-old George Yoe. He is recorded as a farm labourer, and has not been identified.
8. Also in Lansallos, in the household of farmer Ann Ede at Landgreek, is 10-year-old Richard Yoe. He too is recorded as a farm labourer, and has not been identified.
9. Also in Lansallos, in the household of farmer Edward Hocken, is 14-year-old farm labourer John Yoe. His birthplace is recorded as Lansallos; he has not been identified.
10. 20-year-old labourer Thomas Yoe, a lodger in the household of John Rowe in Higher Bore Street, Bodmin. His birthplace is recorded as Launceston; he has not been identified.
