Yoe in the 1841 census

People in eighteen households are recorded in online indexes to the 1841 census for England and Wales with the surname Yoe. None appear to be accurate.

In seven cases the surname was incorrectly written as Yoe:

1. Elizabeth Yoe, recorded in Park Hill, Clapham, a servant in the household of hat maker Henry Pritchard. Elizabeth’s age is rounded to 30; she was with the same employer in the 1851 census aged 42 and is a match to the Elizabeth Yeo baptised at Wincanton, Somerset in 1808 to parents John and Hannah Yeo.

2. Hannah Yoe, recorded in the High Street in Wincanton as a washerwoman aged 70. She is a clear match to the Hannah Yeo whose death was registered at Wincanton in 1848 aged 77, and is likely to be the mother of the Elizabeth Yeo and the widow of the John Yeo described in the previous paragraph. Also in Hannah’s household is 15-year-old tailor Harry Lydford [note 1].

3. John Yoe of the Royal Marines, recorded in Stoke Lane, Plymouth aged 26. In the same household is 21-year-old Eliza Yoe – the enumerator has not followed the instruction to round the ages of adults down to the nearest five years. They appear to be a match to John Yeo and Eliza Curtis, who had married in Plymouth in 1839.

4. John Yoe, recorded at St Veep as an 11-year-old agricultural labourer in the household of farmer Sara Best at West Tencreek. He is a clear match to the John Yeo who was baptised at St Veep in 1830 to parents Samuel Yeo and Elizabeth Curtis – see the paragraph immediately below.

5. In the village of St Veep is agricultural labourer Samuel Yoe, whose age is recorded as 40, living at Churchtown with Elizabeth Yoe (age 34), children Elizabeth (age 7), Rebecca (6), Mary (4) and Samuel (1), and 4-year-old Richard Hicks. They are a clear match to the family of Samuel Yeo and Elizabeth Curtis, who married at St Veep in 1829 and who are recorded in St Veep in the 1851 census.

6. Shopkeeper Henry Yeo, living in Balaam Street, West Ham. His age is recorded as 40; listed with him are Susan Yoe (age 36) and another Susan Yoe (age 2). They match the family of Henry Yeo and Susanna Friend, who married at Greenwich in 1825 – Henry is a recorded as a dock labourer in the 1851 census.

7. Agricultural labourer William Yoe, listed at Polgassic, Lansallos in the household of farmer Henry Bettinson. William’s age is recorded as 15 – he appears to be a match to William Hunking Yeo, who was recorded in St Veep in the 1851 census.

Further research is needed to clarify the remaining eleven records, but it is unlikely that Yoe is correct:

1. Jacb Yoe, a labourer recorded in West Ham in the same household as Bridget Yoe – their ages both rounded to 55. Bridget is probably the Bridget Yeo whose death at the age of 75 was registered at West Ham in 1851. Jacb could be the Jacob Yeo whose death at the age of 90 was registered at West Ham in 1871.

2. Elsewhere in Plymouth is labourer John Yoe, recorded in Fore Street, East Stonehouse with a Mary Yeo of similar age – their ages are rounded to 70 and 60 respectively and they have not been identified. Nearby, possibly in the same building, is 14-year-old Samuel Yeo, who might be the Samuel Yeo baptised at St Andrew, Plymouth in 1825 to parents John Yeo and Ann Ellis.

3. In St Veep is agricultural labourer Henry Yoe, recorded in the household of miller John Martin (?) at Lower Penpoll. Henry’s age is shown as 21 – he has not been identified.

4. Farm servant Jane Yoe, listed in the household of James Allen at Bosgage, Veryan. Her age is recorded as 20; she has not been identified.

5. Bricklayer John Yoe is listed in Abbey Street in Bermonsdey, apparently a lodger in the household of Mary Wilson. John’s age is recorded as 20; he has not been identified.

6. In Lanteglos, near Fowey, in the household of farmer Richard Hicks at Lamellyon, is 10-year-old agricultural labourer Richard Yoe. He has not been identified.

7. In the same village of Lanteglos, listed in the household of farmer Ralph Bourne at Tremeer, is agricultural labourer Samuel Yoe. His age is recorded as 15; he has not been identified.

8. Artist Robert Yoe listed in the household of Maria Rees in Green Street, Neath. His age is recorded as 25; he has not been identified.

9. Policeman John Yoe recorded in Market Street, Llanwonno, Glamorganshire in the household of David Thomas. John’s age is recorded as 20; he has not been identified.

10. William Yoe listed in the household of Thomas Mellon in St John Street, Stoke Damerel. Williams age is recorded as 60 and his occupation as ‘boots’ – he has not been identified.

11. Agricultural labourer William Yoe, listed at Higher Pont, Lanteglos. Recorded with him are Mary Yoe and children William (age 15), Elizabeth (10), John (5) and Henry (8 months). This family should be straightforward to identify.

Note
1. Harry appears to be apprenticed to a tailor; he was probably a son of Elizabeth’s daughter Hannah Yeo, who married John Lydford at Wincanton in 1822.
