William Yeo – Navy pensioner

The details of an 1890 Methodist marriage take careful research to unravel, especially as the handwriting on the certificate is hard to read and the presiding minster made two alterations.

The marriage took place in Kent, at the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Rochester [note 1] in 1890. The groom was 54-year-old widower William Yeo, described as a Navy pensioner and the son of sawyer Isaac Yeo deceased. The bride was 41-year-old widow Jane Payne, described as the daughter of brass finisher Thomas Woodworth deceased. Both parties gave their address as 105 Skinner Street, Gillingham.

William had been baptised at St Austell in 1832 to parents Isaac Yeo and Ann Harvey and had previously married Louisa Widger in Plymouth in 1862. He died in Kent in 1906.

Jane had been born in the East End of London in 1848 as Jane Woodworth, and had previously married Charles Payne in Portsmouth in 1873. She died in Kent in 1895.
