Mary Yeo née Stonelake

Mary Stonelake was baptised at Bovey Tracey in 1799. She is recorded as the daughter of Josias Stonelake, who had married Mary Knapman at Bovey Tracey in 1749.

When Mary married William Yeo in the adjacent parish of Kingsteignton in 1819, her surname was recorded as Stanlake. They had three daughters, see under William Towell and Elizabeth Yeo.

After William’s death in 1827, Mary continued to live in the hamlet of Preston with her surviving daughters Mary Ann and Sarah. The 1841 census records them there, living with innkeeper John Bowden. The return is completed as if Mary and John were married, but there is no church or civil record of this marriage taking place. Perhaps they told the enumerator that they were married, or allowed him to assume it.

Mary continued to live at Preston, and survived John by just over two years. She was buried at Kingsteignton in 1849.
