James Henry Yeo (1858–1910) married Caroline Emma Bunworth by banns at the parish church of St Peter, Islington in 1879. James is described as a clerk, a bachelor of 19 Rydon Street, son of William Yeo deceased [note 1]. Caroline’s address is given as 66 Windsor Street; she is described as a daughter of James Edwin Bunworth, a carver and guilder, and she is recorded as a spinster.
However, Caroline was not a spinster. She had previously married Benjamin James Camp at the parish church of St Martin, Kentish Town in 1873 and he was still alive in 1879. She appeared in court in 1892, accused of ‘intermarrying with James Henry Yeo … her husband Benjamin Camp being then and now alive’ [note 2]. She was released on bail, pending her appearance at the Central Criminal Court (The Old Bailey) to answer a charge of bigamy.
Caroline had been born in 1854. She married for a third time in 1903 [note 3] and lived until 1933.

Notes
1. His parents were William Yeo and Mary Ann Brooker, who married in 1844.
2. As reported in the Standard on 22 July 1892. Benjamin Camp had emigrated to the United States the day after his marriage to Caroline and she had lost contact with him.
3. She married John Thomas (marriage registered at Holborn). Her second husband was still alive, but this 1903 marriage was presumably lawful given the circumstances of the 1879 marriage.
