Henry Yeo and Elizabeth Arthur

Please read About Families before using any of the information on this page.

Henry Yeo (1819–1897, son of John Yeo and Jane Philpot) was baptised at Swimbridge. He married Elizabeth Arthur [note 1] at the Independent Chapel in South Molton in 1846. The marriage certificate records that they were both living in Burrington and were both previously unmarried; Henry is described as a farmer and Elizabeth – who was also known as Jennie – as a farmer’s daughter.

Henry and Elizabeth lived at Swimbridge and had two daughters [note 2]:
– Jane Arthur Yeo (see below)
– Thirza Ann Yeo (see below).
The 1851 census for Swimbridge records Henry and Elizabeth with their daughters Jane (age 4) and Thirza (1). Henry is farming 30 acres and his widowed mother Jane is also living with them. Henry and Elizabeth emigrated to Ontario on the SS Nestorian in 1872 [note 3].

Jane Arthur Yeo (1847–1890, daughter of Henry Yeo and Elizabeth Arthur) was born at Burrington. She married Aaron Stephens in 1876; they emigrated to Ontario, where they had at least seven children

Thirza Ann Yeo (1849–1912, daughter of Henry Yeo and Elizabeth Arthur) emigrated with her parents and married William Scott. They had three sons.

Notes
1. Surname also recorded as Aurther. The spelling of the second forename of her daughter Jane varies.
2. Some researchers record up to seven additional children for them, but as their dates of birth all precede the 1846 marriage they appear to be incorrectly assigned. They include a Francis Yeo (born 1843, married Rebecca Clarke 1865).
3. Henry’s wife Elizabeth died in Ontario in 1890. He married his second wife Harriet Stratton in 1892.
