Ernest Joseph Wilson Yeo and Caroline Elizabeth Amelia Pateman

Ernest Joseph Wilson Yeo (1899–1969, son of Joseph William Yeo and Eliza Ellen Anstey [note 1]) married Caroline Elizabeth Amelia Pateman at the parish church of St Clement, Bristol in 1918. Their marriage certificate records Ernest as an 18-year-old bachelor, a private in the 52nd Battalion the Hampshire Regiment and ‘on active service’, son of chemist Joseph William Yeo. Caroline is recorded as a 17-year-old spinster of 13 Dale Street, daughter of labourer John Thomas Pateman. They were married by licence.

Ernest and Caroline had two daughters; they also had five sons:
– Ernest Percival Joseph Yeo (1918–1969, married Brenda Edith Budding, five children)
– William Hector John Yeo (1922–1943,  married Winifred May Portch, one son) [note 2]
– Frederick George Wilson Yeo (1925–1944) [note 3]
– Ronald Victor Yeo (1928–1959, married Margaret Diane Farleigh)
– Hugh Ivor Yeo (1931–2014, married Marguerite Irene Higgs).

The 1939 register records the family at 49 Lockleaze Road in the Horfield area of Bristol. Ernest is a 30-year-old aero fitter and labourer, his wife Caroline is the same age, and their children include William H.J. Yeo (age 17, working for an engineer) and Hugh I. Yeo (age 8). Also in the household is Ernest’s 66-year-old mother-in-law Caroline Pateman.

2. William died while serving as a Flying Officer with the Royal Air Force.
3. Frederick died while serving in the Netherlands as a driver with the Royal Army Service Corps, and was buried at the Bergen-op-Zoom war cemetery in Belgium.
