Stanley Edward Cardy and Winifred May Yeo

The 1921 census for the village of Marden in Kent records Winifred May Yeo in the household of bricklayer Alfred Croft in Maidstone Road. She is recorded as a ‘nurse child’, indicating that she was being informally fostered.

Eighteen years later, the 1939 Register records Winifred at 22 Lynton Gardens in Wood Green, north London. It gives her occupation as ‘Works Canteen Waitress’ and her year of birth as 1915 [note 1].

Winifred married Stanley Edward Cardy in London in 1941 [note 2] – they had a child the following year. Stanley’s death at sea in 1943 is not confirmed.

Winifred might have had another child in 1948; she died in 1993.

Notes
1. This date appears to be inaccurate as there is no matching birth registration and the 1921 census mentioned above gives Winifred’s age as 3 years 11 months. She appears to have been born in 1917 to widowed mother Emily Mary Yeo née Welfare.
2. Had Winifred previously married Edward Ware in 1937?
