Edward Yeo and May Priscilla Tattam

The marriage certificate for this couple contains three alterations – none of which were initialled at left by the presiding minister as they should have been – and a further error. The wedding took place at Holy Trinity parish church in Southall, west London in 1930 following the reading of banns, and was conducted by the reverend Samuel Martin Young.

Edward’s age is given as 31, his place of residence at ‘Stratton, St Margaret’ [note 1] and his father as carpenter Frederick Edward Yeo, deceased [note 2]. Edward’s occupation is entered as ‘G.W.R.’ followed by a word that has been crossed out and replaced with ‘Fireman’.

May’s age is written as 24 (altered to 25) and she is described as a spinster of 8 Raldolph Road, daughter of taxi-cab driver Alfred Thomas Tattam. The word ‘spinster’ has been crossed through [note 3].

Notes
1. Stratton St Margaret is a Wiltshire parish a short distance north-east of Swindon. Edward’s date of birth is shown in the 1939 Register [note 4] as 12 August 1898, matching a birth registration in the Highworth district, which included Stratton St Margaret. He lived until 1958.
2. This name is inaccurate: Edward’s father was Frederick Edwin Yeo (1868–1916), who had married Sarah Ann Fell in 1882.
3. There is no record of a previous marriage, so no reason for ‘spinster’ to have been crossed out. May’s parents were Alfred Thomas Tattam and Annie Eliza Meadows – her birth was registered at Islington in the third quarter of 1905.
4. The address is 353 Cricklade Road, Swindon. Edward is a boiler washer working for the Great Western Railway; his wife May P Yeo and his widowed father-in-law Alfred T Tattam are listed in the same household.
