Edward Sanders Welsh and Jane Yeo

This couple married in Devon in 1852. Their marriage certificate records the ceremony at the parish church in Great Torrington; they were both aged 22 and gave their address as Mill Street.

Edward was a labourer, son of labourer Joseph Welsh. Jane was a spinster, daughter of labourer Richard Yeo [note 1]. They married after the reading of banns, so were both resident in the parish. Neither father acted as a witness, which suggests that they were not present – the marriage took place on Thursday 25 March, so perhaps they were unable to attend.

The assistant curate John Cawston conducted the ceremony; he wrote Edward’s second forename as Saunders but crossed through the ‘u’. The correct spelling Sanders is confirmed by the groom’s signature.
