John Hackwell Yeo (1851–1901) and Lilla Hill (1857–1926) married at the parish church of St Philip and St Jacob, Bristol in 1884. John had enlisted in the Army eight years earlier. The 1881 census records John in Woolwich as a driver with the Royal Artillery. He was discharged in 1883 before completing the twelve years of service he signed up for in 1876. His army record shows that he had been treated in hospital for a fractured kneecap the previous year.

John’s parents Joseph Yeo [note 1] and Sarah Hackwell [note 2] married in Bristol in 1847 [note 3]. They had three other sons:
– William Henry Yeo (born 1847)
– Joseph Yeo (1848–1853) [note 4]
– Edward George Yeo (1853–1853).
