Daniel Parnell Yea (1852–1917) was born at Marldon near Newton Abbot to parents James Yea and Sally Parnell. He married Margaret Howe at Ellacombe in 1872; soon afterwards, they emigrated to the United States and settled in Cleveland, Ohio.

Ten years later, the 1900 census records the family at 818 East 105th Street, Cleveland: Daniel is 57, and still working as a carpenter.
