William Henry Yeo of St Winnow

A carefully engraved headstone in the parish churchyard at St Winnow reads as follows:

Sacred to the dear memory of William Henry Yeo who died February 27th 1915 aged 60 / and of Louisa his daughter who died February 22nd 1915 aged 36 / also of Catherine Yeo mother of the above who died February 22nd 1876 aged 44

It is not straightforward to relate this inscription to birth, marriage and death registration records. St Winnow is in the Liskeard registration district.

William’s death was registered at Plymouth in the first quarter of 1915; if his body was taken to St Winnow for burial there was presumably a family connection to the parish.

Louisa’s death was registered at Tavistock in the first quarter of 1915, so her body was also taken to St Winnow for burial, presumably because she was William’s daughter. No surname is recorded for her on the headstone – she had married Ernest Charles Pierce Maker in 1903.

Catherine’s death was registered at Liskeard in the first quarter of 1876, her age recorded as 43 rather than 44. Presumably she was William’s mother, if she died before Louisa was born. No matching birth record has been found.

Louisa’s age at death matches the birth of a Louisa Yeo registered at Bodmin in 1880 to parents William Yeo and Elizabeth Jane Lobb. So did Elizabeth die and did William re-marry? [note 1]
