On the James Baines

Descendants in Australia of Yeo families from Swimbridge will probably know of the 1854/55 voyage of the elegant clipper ship James Baines as many lines there stem from people who emigrated on it.

The James Baines left Liverpool on 9 December 1854 with 609 passengers and arrived at Melbourne on 12 February 1855.

John Yeo – baptised at Swimbridge in 1839 – emigrated on this voyage with his parents James Yeo and Elizabeth Yeo. At Melbourne, those bound for New South Wales joined the Hellespont to sail to Sydney, which would have taken a further two weeks.

Some seven years later, John married Ellen Walters at Lochinvar, New South Wales.
