Augustus Frederick Hanewinkel and Alice Louisa Yeo

German rope maker Augustus Frederick Hanewinkel (1861–1904) married Alice Louisa Yeo (1848–1915) at the church of St Stephen the Martyr, Edge Hill, Liverpool on 30 June 1873. The marriage was registered in the West Derby registration district in the second quarter of the year.

Shortly after Alice’s death on 20 March 1915, the family changed its surname from Hanewinkel to Armstrong.

Alice had been baptised at the parish church of St Martin, in Liverpool on 22 October 1848, but was from a north Devon family. Her eight children included Alice Yeo Armstrong (1880–1982).

A correspondent has kindly done this, and has sent us a copy of the marriage certificate of Alice Louisa Yeo’s parents. John Yeo (1824–1863) and Sarah Jopson (1824–1897) married at the parish church in Walton-on-the-Hill, Liverpool on 25 December 1845. The certificate describes John as a bachelor and a mariner, and records his father as James Yeo deceased, a millwright [note 1]. Sarah is a spinster. She had been baptised in the same church on 21 June 1824 to parents Robert Jopson and Alice Rigby.

John and Sarah had five daughters:
– Alice Louisa Yeo, as above
– Margaret Rowson Yeo (1851–1922, married George Roberts)
– Sarah Elizabeth Yeo (1855–1932, married Matthew Leavens Fawcitt)
– Elizabeth Caroline Yeo (1859–1930, married Edward Thomas Lloyd)
– Emily Miriam Yeo (1860–1956, married Harry Coop).

Note:
1. This information appears to be incorrect. John’s parents might have been John Yeo and Susanna Taylor, but further research is required.
